Sea Lion Caves
This private attraction offers visitors a unique opportunity to take an elevator down to see the world's largest sea cave and its resident Steller sea lions. The Sea lions usually gather during fall and winter. In spring and summer, they breed and have their young on rock ledges just outside the cave. The caves are part of the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve so the seals are all wild, in their natural habitat. The viewing area is small and dark as to keep human presence to a minimum. Admission is charged, and there is a nice gift shop.
Oregon Coast Sights
Until 1961, when the elevator was completed, the northern end opening served as the entryway to Sea Lion Caves after a climb down a 1500-foot trail, followed by a 135-step staircase enclosed in a wooden tower.
