Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint
Pilot Butte is an in-town highpoint with panoramic views of the region. You can drive or hike to the top of this old cinder cone located on the east end of Bend. It rises nearly 500 feet above the surrounding area. Pilot Butte is an old cinder cone with three trails, all of which wind up through stands of juniper and sage to the summit. In the distance to the west are the Cascades with the Three Sisters, Broken Top, Mt. Bachelor, Mt. Jefferson, Black Butte and Mt. Hood being easily identifiable. The view below is of the city of Bend. Nearly a million visitors go to the top each year. The City of Bend launches a 4th of July fireworks from Pilot Butte each year.
