Located on a bend of the Siuslaw River, Florence is the sand dune base of the west coast. The most unique thing you must do in Florence is to go on a sand dune ride on a dune buggy. Rentals and tours are offered south of town. Florence is also known for many beautiful lakes making fishing and water sports a major activity. The town is a blend of old and new with everything you need as a basecamp into the nearby wild adventure activities.

Old Town

The historic Old Town, right on the Siuslaw River has the unusual specialty shops, galleries, historic buildings, restaurants, and a harbor with fishing boats. Creative events are also held in Old Town.

Siuslaw River Bridge

The Siuslaw River Bridge was one of five major bridges built in 1936, and like others, replaced ferry service across the river. The 140 foot, double-leaf bascule drawspan is noted for its decorative touches. The river, which is navigable about 14 miles inland to Mapleton, is popular with sport fishermen and crabbers.

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

The Oregon Dunes stretch for almost 40 miles from Florence south to Coos Bay. Sculpted by the wind and towering up to 500 feet above sea level, these dunes are the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America. Recreational activities in the dunes include all types of off-road vehicles to sand boarding, hiking, horseback riding and camping.

Sea Lion Caves

Not far from town is this vast cavern with the roar of the great Steller sea lions. The tour takes you down an elevator to see the world's largest sea cave with all its wildlife.

Freshwater Lakes & Streams

With over 30 lakes, ponds and streams, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, diving and fishing are also popular activities here. Check out Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park for access to Cleawox and Woahink Lakes. Or, kayak to the ocean in a unique way by going down the Siltcoos River.
