Just a 2.5 hour drive south of Auckland, Tauranga is New Zealands fifth largest city. It is located on the waters edge and is well-known for blue skies, warm climate, a sparkling harbor and relaxed lifestyle. Although there may be many things to see in Tauranga, our visit focused on the Mount Maunganui area. This area is full of beach rentals, small hotels and a few shops. You can walk the boardwalk, hike out on Moturiki Island, explore Mount Drury Reserve, swim in the hot pools, or walk the bay side of Tauranga.

Originally known as HopuKiore, this small mound was used by early Maori for burials and a carving school. Caves and terraces have evidence of Maori occupation. Today, the summit is used by the Port of Tauranga for communication with ships. The short hike up is easy and scenic until the summit, which has views obscured by trees.
