If there were not so many tall trees as you approach the Nisqually Entrance of Mount Rainier, you would really notice Tumtum Peak. The cone shaped mountain is easily recognized, but only if you can get high above the trees. Access to the mountain is easy; it sits right above the roadway. In winter, it makes for a perfect snowshoe trip for those looking for a challenge but something safe. When I was there, a tree on the summit was decorated with Christmas decorations.
Tumtum Peak
Distance: 2.5 miles
Elevation Gain: 2,300 feet
Summit Elevation: 4,678 feet
Access Rating: Paved
Enter the Nisqually Entrance and drive a few miles to the Kautz Creek Parking area on the right. The trail is on the other side of the road.
Access:
Hike up the Kautz Creek Trail one mile to the river crossing. This first mile is a popular snowshoe hike so the trail is likely packed down. Once over the creek, keep following the trail for a bit, then turn left going through open old growth forests. Climb until you reach a gradual ridgeline, and then follow the sometimes steep hillside to the summit. There are no views on top so bring an ornament for the tree.
