Construction on the first Salt Lake Tabernacle began in May 1851, on the southwest corner of Temple Square, where the Assembly Hall now stands. It was dedicated April 6, 1852 and seated 2,500 . It was an adobe building. As church membership increased, this old tabernacle become inadequate and was demolished in 1877. The currently standing Salt Lake Tabernacle was finished in 1867 so for 10 years, both tabernacles were standing together. When the old tabernacle was finally demolished, in its place was built the Assembly Hall.
