Constructed in 1889, the Moroni Tabernacle replaced the Moroni Meeting House that was built in 1870 constructed of adobe. The Moroni Ward was organized in 1859 by families from Nephi, shortly after the arrival of the pioneers, and one of the founders, George Washington Bradley was bishop for 18 years. The Moroni Tabernacle was a ward building, and not a stake building. The area was originally called Mego after an Indian by that name but when organized as a ward in 1859, George Peacock of Manti (Sanpete's first probate judge) suggested the name of Moroni after the Book of Mormon Nephite city. Another significant building, the Moroni Opera House (National Register 1996), was completed in 1891.
