Draper Fire Aug 25, 2008
Around noon I noticed an airplane flying funny over Lone Peak. I went upstairs to take a better look and saw smoke. Given the location I knew all Lone peak was about to go up in flames. I was expecting this fire, just not the first year we were here.
Grabbed the kids and headed toward it. Here it is in the first hour.
New Draper Temple isn't even finished yet...good thing the fire is going the other direction.
People started rushing home but what could they do?
Here is the fire from Harmons Grocery...had to grab some milk.
As the day progressed, it got much worse. Here it is from our deck and windows. Luckly the wind was blowing north so no smoke came toward our house.
Here is the valley view with the fire on Lone Peak.
As the fire burned northward, a few developments were higher on the hill and mandatory evacuations were ordered there. Massive retardent drops were done to protect those homes.
At the local park watching the fire.
Another valley view later in the day as a thunderstorm was passing near the fire.
By evening time, the fire was much calmer having been stopped by natural barriers like cliffs and lack of fuels. Some of the canyons burned through the night and small fires are still going the next day.
