Djupalonssandur Beach

The translation is Black Lava Pearl Beach and walking where a lava field hits ocean is really something. The formations make for some interesting photography. There is history too, as the beach is scattered with pieces from a British fishing vessel that wrecked here in 1948. Fourteen men died and five were saved by an Icelandic rescue team. Many of the bodies washed up here. Today, the ship parts are left as a memorial.
