Arriving in Salzburg Austria, we got out of the station and looked down the street to see a parade coming. But, this wasn't the average parade as it was extremely noisy with smoke and junk flying off the floats. Imagine 25 open semi tractor trailer trucks full of drunken parting people. Each truck had 8-10 speakers, lights, and smoke. Hundreds of partiers walked along the trucks as well. After watching this, we hiked to our campground that was overlooking the city. After a rotisserie chicken at the camp restaurant, we hiked down to the town (through the party still going on) to the older part of the city. We hiked up to the fortress to an amazing view over Salzburg. Down in town, we watched the older generation celebrate till 11 PM in the main square. Their were fireworks from the fountain, a huge crowd, candle people doing dancing and a live Mozart concert. While in the crowd, we got separated as the Austrian president was escorted right through the crowd between us, I could have touched him.
In the morning we packed up camp and got picked up by the Sound of Music Tour. The bus was full. We went to all the sites in the movie. The tour guide was very funny. The bus also went up to the Lakes area of the mountains and made several stops. It was fun. Tour dropped us off at the train station where we were off to Vienna.
In Vienna, we got a cheap hotel only about 30 bucks. It was listed in the Frommers book. First sight we saw was Shonbrun, a big palace with lots of lands and gardens. Then we went to the old city to get the pictures of the old buildings. Kind of boring place for us but we saw it. From here we hit a night train to Budapest Hungary but upon return, spent a final day in Austria in Innsbruck, a nice little city tucked away underneath some great looking mountains.

Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria. Salzburg's "Old Town" has internationally renowned baroque architecture and one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Salzburg was also the setting for parts of the musical film The Sound of Music.
Vienna is the capital of the Republic of Austria and one of the nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primary city, with more than 25% of Austria's population in the surrounding area, it is the cultural, economic, and political centre. Vienna lies in the east of Austria and is close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. These regions work together in a European Centrope border region. Along with nearby Bratislava, Vienna forms a metropolitan region with 3 million inhabitants, and this region is referred to as Twin City.
Innsbruck is the capital city of the federal state of Tyrol in western Austria. It is located in the Inn Valley. The word bruck comes from a German word meaning "bridge" which leads to "the bridge over the Inn". Innsbruck is located in a broad valley between high mountains. To the north is the Hafelekar at 7,657 feet and Patscherkofel at 7,369 ft. To the south is Serles at 8,917 feet. Since it's a good size city in a beautiful location, they have been able to host a few Winter Olympics and other winter events.
