Burnt Mountain can make for an interesting outing if you like off season road walking. As you approach Burnt, the road passes two locations of long gone lookouts. The first was the O'Farrell Lookout location. Years later, it was replaced by the Carbon Ridge Lookout just a bit further up the ridge. Both are minor walks above the roadway. Even Burnt Mountain has changed. A road now leads nearly to the summit. The nice timber in these pictures is likely gone by now. Burnt Mountain is not too exciting of a highpoint but if the summit is now logged off, the views could be pretty nice.
Burnt Mountain
Distance: 0.5 to 10 miles
Elevation Gain: 200 to 3,500 feet
Summit Elevation: 5,460 feet
Access Rating: Unknown gravel and dirt conditions
Drive as high as you can before being stopped by gates, snow, tree fall, washouts, etc. At the south end of Wilkenson, veer left on Railroad Avenue. Follow to a right turn on Quinnon Road. The road will climb steeply passing Sunset Lake Church Camp. At the main intersection at the 1952 elevation on the topo map, is a logging road to the right. The road is not shown on current Forest Service maps as it is a private logging road, likely gated. I don't know the current status of this road but you might get lucky and not have to walk or bike it. Follow roads shown on the map to reach the different points of interest.
