Montserrat Helicopter Tour
Montserrat is a British Territory Caribbean island, part of the Lesser Antilles chain. It is most known for the Soufriere Hills volcano that erupted in 1995 and continues to have episodes. There have been five periods of lava flow, explosive activity and pyroclastic flows. The eruptions have caused significant damage to the south of the island and destroyed the town of Plymouth, which now is the only volcanic-buried town in the Americas. The area is now in an exclusion zone where the only way to visit is by helicopter. From the air, you can see homes and businesses destroyed. A closer inspection of the ghost town would find belongings left behind like toys, cradles, books and clothing. Montserrat has very little tourism, the north end of the island remains unaffected with black-sand beaches, coral reefs, cliffs and shoreline caves. A few homes offer overnight stays and promote rustic vacation, natural beauty, bird watching, etc. Our helicopter tour of Montserrat was from St Johns, Antigua, a 30 minute ride over water from the NE.
