For those looking for a challenge, the Campbell Lake Trail has become known as the Harrison Grind, a steep climb to a local viewpoint of Harrison Lake. The upper 2/3 of the trail is quite scenic, a very nice forest trail even if the view does not pan out from the viewpoint above.
The Harrison Grind - Campbell Lake Trail
Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
Elevation Gain: 650m (2,133feet)
Access: Paved
Access:
From Harrison Hot Springs, go south down Hot Springs Road to Balsam Avenue. Look right and there is a Kiosk with some parking behind in a gravel lot. Signs say private property at the same time saying Campbell Lake Trail. Go through the gate, not the trail on the right going into a nice cedar forest.
Route:
The route starts out by following a gravel road up to the city water reservoir. The trail starts on the left side of the tower area, going up an old logging road in the forest. After a few switchbacks, the trail breaks out at some power-lines. The trail continues up the power-lines and is probably very overgrown. Maintenance seems minimal when it comes to trail work in the Harrison Hot Springs area. Soon the route goes back into the open forest and starts climbing a very nice second growth forest that shows few signs of the original harvest. There are several pockets of old growth during the route as well. Along the way are several interesting bridges and steps, all adding to the character of this trail. Eventually the trail wraps over a ridge and reaches a small viewpoint. The view is only one direction, toward Harrison Lake. You can continue another 45 minutes to reach Campbell Lake on a generally level trail.
