Steps Selaron
The Escadaria Selaron have become world-famous steps. They are located just above the downtown Rio de Janeiro area, running between Convento de Santa Teresa and Rua Joaquim Silva. The project is the work of Chilean-born artist Jorge Selaron who said it was his tribute to the Brazilian people. Each step is unique and is made from ceramic tiles sent to Selaron from all over the world. The project began in 1990 when Selaron began renovation the steps in front of his house. At first the tiles were just the colors of the Brazilian flag, blue, green and yellow. Over time, this hobby project became an obsession. There are 250 steps measuring 125 meters long which are covered in over 2000 tiles collected from over 60 countries around the world. Selaron considered the work as never complete and claimed that his crazy and unique dream will only end on the day of his death, which happened in January 2013.
