Ipanema & Parque Garota - Rio De Janeiro

Although Copacabana gets all the fame, Ipanema Beach just minutes away is just as nice and is considered more upscale and classy. The Travel Channel listed Ipanema Beach as the sexiest beach in the world. Ipanema is also considered much safer than Copacabana. The neighborhoods nearby are mostly middle to affluent neighborhoods of Rio so there is a larger police presence in Ipanema. The beach is narrower than Copacabana but you still find people doing all the same beach activities found elsewhere. There are fewer hotels and restaurants than Copacabana with more condos and apartments. Many parcel the long beach into three, Ipanema, Arpoador and Leblon Beaches. Ipanema is native tongue for dangerous water which is the case, the surf can be rough along this stretch. Life guard stations are placed strategically along the entire beach. Many areas have large tents where local venders are renting lounge chairs, umbrellas and drinks. The views from Ipanema can be amazing. To the west are the Dois Irmaos (Two Brothers) mountains that rise high with sharp summits. Nearby is flat topped Pedra da Gavea. At the other end is Parque Garota, situated between Ipanema and Copacabana. The Ipanema promenade will take you right into this park. The main feature is Arpoador Rock, which offers striking views of Ipanema Beach to Dois Irmaos. Several trails skirt all over the rock giving sweet views in many different directions.
