Copacabana Beach - Rio De Janeiro

Copacabana is an area of Rio De Janeiro but it is specifically the beach that makes it world famous. The 2.5 mile long, super wide, crescent shaped shoreline with rocky cliffs at each end make Copacabana irresistible. The beach is so big there is room for thousands of swimmers and sunbathers while soccer and beach volleyball games are being played further up from the waters edge. The beach is complemented by the Copacabana promenade which runs the entire length of Copacabana Beach. The promenade was completed in 1970 and has used the black and white Portuguese pavement design since its origin in the 1930s. The most iconic shot of the beach is with 700 foot Pao de Aï¿œucar (Sugarloaf Mountain) which towers on the coastline in the distance. The city side of Copacabana Beach is lined with tourist and luxury hotels, indoor and outdoor restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Copacabana Beach is illuminated at night by stadium lights allowing the entire beach to be used for activities. Still, most recommend not walking the beach at night and stick to the promenade. Of course the most popular sport on the beach is soccer and you can find games being played all along the beach. The other big game is futvolei, this is volleyball played only with feet, no hands. Others are busy building sand sculptures but they are doing it as a business. If you want a picture, they are requesting money. They even leave a guard up all night protecting the sculpture from competitors. Tourists also like to shop so a small flee market pops up in the evening. More established shops are one block in on Avenida de Nossa Senhora
