Grandfather Mountain Trail to Calloway Peak, North Carolina

HOME
Blue Ridge Parkway
This has to be one of the most unique trails in the United States. Not far from the tourist area on Grandfather Mountain are a series of ladders and cables up cliff faces. The trail is super packed but the further you hike, the fewer people you see, as most tourists do not keep going past the ladders and cables on the first peak, MacRae Peak. The next mountain is Attic Window Peak and finally, the highest point called Calloway Peak. The views actually get worse the further you go but many strong individuals set the goal to reach the true summit, Calloway Peak. It is possible to climb all three peaks on free access trails outside from the paid Grandfather Mountain area, but it is way better to discover coming up with the tourists over the cables and ladders. All three peaks are in Grandfather Mountain State Park, including the cables and ladders. If you to approach by the paid area, you do need to be back to your car by 5 p.m. because they close the road.
Summit Elevation: 5,946 feet
Hiking Distance: 2.4 miles one-way
Elevation Gain: 900 or so feet (from tourist area)
Prominence: 2,426 feet
Access: Paved
